Monkwearmouth Station

The once busy Monkwearmouth Station in Sunderland dating back to 1848 provided a link for passengers from Wearside to South Shields and Gateshead. With dwindling passenger numbers the station closed to travelers in 1967, although to this day trains from Sunderland to Newcastle still pass through the station. The building was saved from dereliction by Sunderland Corporation and reopened as a Museum by HRH the Duke of Edinburgh in 1973.
